HOW IT ALL BEGAN
George Bugeja started BJR Chain and Engineering Supplies with a mobile phone, an old ute as his office and a fax machine and some stock at his Penguin home in 1989.
Within six months, the business had grown and it had to find bigger premises. Mr Bugeja did a survey on the best location for an office and found Ulverstone’s central location between the two main cities of Burnie and Devonport was the ideal location to service all. After discussions with Bellchambers Bros Engineering in Short St, it was decided to rent a tin shed there till a new office was constructed.
‘‘At the time we moved into the new warehouse I felt it was far too large and had thoughts of renting out the back half,’’ he said. ‘‘However, within 12 months that area was also full.’’
After 13 years it became necessary to again move to larger premises. BJR has recently purchased a much larger warehouse in Trevor Street. The showroom itself is 4 times the size of the previous one in Short Street.
